KATANA BY TOMOTSUGU
This is a very strong katana by the Etchu smith, Tomotsugu. He was from the Uda school and he worked in Etchu Province around the Tenmon era (1532). It is slightly suriage but still has a cutting edge of 28 3/16 inches or 71.6 cm. The moto-haba is 1.2 inches or 3.01 cm and the saki-haba is 0.82 inches or 2.1 cm. The hada is ko-itame and quite lovely showing the nothern dark steel of Etchu Province. The hamon is ko-gunome mixed with choji majiri. It is in good polish and in a new shirasaya. There are a few minor openings above the shinogi in areas but this is very acceptable for a Koto period blade and does not detract from the swords beauty or value. There are no flaws or problems.
This sword comes with World War Two Army gunto koshirae with a leather covered scabbard. It bears the family mon of the owner who carried this sword into war. It comes with NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon papers attesting to the validity of the signature and the high quality of the blade.
