This is a lovely iron tsuba signed Choshû Hagi Jû Tomotsune Saku. It measure 3 inches or 7.7 cm by 2 11/16 inches or 6.9 cm. It is a fairly heavy and dense tsuba measuring approximately 3/16 inches or 0.5 cm thick at the nakago ana. The design is that of boldly carved waves cascading towards the nakago ana. The condition is excellent.
There were four generations of smiths from the Hagi area of Choshû who signed Tomotsune. Three were from the Nakai (中井) family and one was from the Kawaji (河治) family. The smith from the Kawaji (河治) family worked from 1650-1700 and the three smiths from the Nakai (中井) family spanned the years from 1669-1780.
