Nihonto.com is very proud to present for sale this outstanding Ko-Kinkô Mogai-umisachi-chirashi no zu tsuba (藻貝海幸散図鐔)tsuba depicting an arrangement of arc clams and other marine life, primarily octopuses.  This tsuba dates to the late Muromachi period of the 16th century.  This is an unusual subject matter that has been executed superbly.  It is a large tsuba measuring 8.2 cm, (3.24 inches) high, 7.5 cm  (2 15/16 inches) wide, and, 0.5 cm (1/4 inch) in width at the rim.

As one would expect with a Jûyô tsuba of this school, the overall condition and quality is wonderful.  Below is a translation of the 68th Juyo zufu describing this wonderful piece:

Explanation:

Ko-Kinkō is an umbrella term for early soft metal fittings made until the Momoyama period. This tsuba is of shakudō with a nanako ground and displays an elaborate takabori relief of an abundance of octopuses and arc clams in the ocean. The rim is a raised dote-mimi that is accented with chisel marks, providing some variance. No coloration was used, resulting with the polished parts of the underlying shakudō ground of this masterly crafted tsuba having a highly tasteful appearance.
