BEAUTIFUL SHAKUDO JAPANESE SWORD TSUBA 080124

Nihonto.com is pleased to present this exquisite shakudo nanako tsuba depicting a golden tree with six shakudo chidori birds on the obverse and golden tree branches with another six shakudo chidori birds on the reverse.  As noted the entire surface including the mimi (edge) is covered in extremely fine nanako

This tsuba is signed Hirada Ikkin Tsukuru (永田一琴 造).  There were two generations of smiths originally from Dewa Province who signed Funada Ikkin (船田一琴) who worked in the mid to late 1800’s.  The first generation moved to Edo (Tokyo) and became a student of Gotô Ichijô for a period of time before returning to Shônai in Dewa Province and went to work for the Sakai Daimyo there.  The second generation, also born in Dewa Province, moved first to Kyôto and then to Edo where he also studied with Gotô Ichijô.

There is talk that there was a third generation, but this is still under further study.  While the maker of the tsuba presented here is signed Hirada Ikkin instead of Funada Ikkin as are the two generations above, it is entirely possible that he may be related in some way, even possibly as the third generation.  Certainly, his working time period and style of fine shakudo nanako and other decorations is on par with the other two Ikkin smiths.

Even if it turns out that there is no direct relationship, no one can deny that the subject tsuba is not of classic beauty and execution.  It is just lovely and in superb condition.  It measures 2 15/16 inches or 7.5 cm tall and 2 11/16 inches or 6.8 cm wide.  It also comes in a very nice custom made wooden box.  It would be a great addition to any collection.
