This is an outstanding Kyo Kinko tsuba from the Edo period (1700’s-1800’s). The shakudo is a very dark and luxurious black color showing that it has a high degree of gold. It is intricately carved showing the famous battle on the bridge in Kyotô between Minamoto Yoshitsune and Musashibo Benkei that took place when they first met during the Kamakura Era (1100’s).
Yoshitsune defeated Benkei who then became a devoted follower of Yoshitsune. The carving is absolutely exquisite as one can tell from the photos and the condition is outstanding with very little, if any, wear or rubbing to the carvings.
This tsuba is slightly oval and measures 2 7/8 inches by 2 13/16 inches, suitable for a katana or a wakizashi. The face of Yoshitsune is done in copper and that of Benkei is done in shakudo. The balance of the tsuba including clothing, weapons, plants, bridge, etc. are all done of shakudo with gold highlights and decorations.
This tsuba comes with NBTHK Hozon papers attesting to its authenticity and quality. It is also contained in a custom made wooden box. All in all, a most wonderful piece of Samurai art.
