Nihonto.com is pleased to present this absolutely wonderful gold, silver, and shakudo kozuka. Let me start by saying that the photos do not do it justice. This kozuka depicts a sea battle (probably Dan no Ura fought in 1185) with two boats brimming with armored Samurai. I counted the Samurai and got a total of twenty-nine with twenty-four facing front and another five shown in a rear view.
The attention to detail and the skill of execution on this kozuka is unbelievable and stunning. The gold has been applied in thick sheets that are expertly carved and the Samurai are all done in shakudo and gold, and silver Also a few of the Samurai faces are done in copper which adds a nice contrast to this piece. The reverse is applied in a thick sheet of gold.
Overall the condition of this kozuka is superb and it is an absolute delight to study and enjoy. It comes in a custom made wooden box together with NBTHK Hozon papers attesting to its authenticity, attribution, and condition.
