Here was have a lovely example of an Edo period (18th-19th century) kozuka of the Kaga-kinko school.  The background is an exquisitely created shakudo nanako that is so fine and regular that it looks almost wet.  The design carved and inlaid on the nanako surface is that of three men having to expend much energy in their effort of  pulling a boat containing five men, the boat, and its cargo up a river.  The detail of the men, their clothes, the boat, surrounding trees, and the river itself are made of shakudo, silver, and gold.  The reverse side of this kozuka has been inlaid with a thick piece of gold that has been seamlessly blended with the shakudo base and wrapped around a portion of the obverse to beautifully frame the design on the front. One can spend hours studying the minute details of this work and enjoying every minute.

This piece of art comes in a custom-made wooden box and has been awarded Hozon papers be the NBTHK which attest to its authenticity, age, and quality.  The condition of this piece is excellent.
